How to write an outline for an essay?
Writing an outline for an essay can vary depending on the type of essay or writing assignment you are working on. Basically, you want to come up with a plan that will help you write your essay to the best of your ability. An outline may be seen as a list of instructions to help you write each part of your assignment. This also helps in allowing you to focus on the assignment in parts instead of as a whole. The following steps may help you create your own essay outline which can be quite simple.
- Seek sample outlines for additional ideas and suggestions. A sample outline can give an idea of what actions you want to be sure to include when you create your own.
- Select your topic if you already haven’t done so. It may help to choose something general that you can focus on and develop into a main topic idea later.
- Decide the general purpose for the essay topic. This may depend on the type of essay you are writing (persuasive, cause and effect, argumentative, compare and contrast, etc.). You are likely determining the scope of why you are writing about the topic.
- Begin research on your topic. Collect necessary data such as statistics, quotes, images, theories and other details to help prove your topic.
- Determine the order to present your data. Meaning, once you have collected your information, decide how it will be presented in the essay. Your data should be presented in a way that helps logically explain your argument or contradicts your main idea of the topic.
- Write a concise sentence or outline for the actual topic. This may be known as your thesis statement or constructing the main idea of the essay.
- Define the main sections of your essay. This may vary depending on school guidelines and instructions or the type of essay you are writing. Basically, this may include different sections or categories for where the data you have collected will be presented. Each section should include at least two important points of interest to write about.
- Make sure your data is consistent to the type of essay you are writing. For instance, if your essay is related to cause and effect, you should have enough evidence from each element to help prove your point.
- Keep in mind any requirements for formatting and citations if necessary.
